Did you know that your body is composed of over 60 percent water? Walking through a grocery store gives you aisles of beverage choices, but nothing is as good for you as plain, fresh water. In fact, any drink that has added sugar, salt or caffeine reduces the hydration effect.
Because of our biological makeup, staying hydrated is essential for optimal health and comfort. Proper hydration helps moisten tissues throughout the body, regulate body temperature, lubricate joints, flush out toxins, make nutrients accessible to your organs and more.
During winter, your body’s need for water is even greater. With the cold, dry air, it’s easy to become dehydrated. And just a two percent drop in your body’s water volume can cause dizziness, fatigue and muscle cramps. Of course, these effects can be reversed by drinking water. You should aim to drink about eight cups of water every day.
On very cold days, a glass of water may not sound terribly appealing. But rather than turning to some fancy drink from the coffee shop that’s layered with sugary syrups, try brewing tea or sipping on chicken broth. These drinks are mostly water and contain other nutrients as well, without detracting from your body’s hydration.
Many people struggle with dehydration during winter because the body’s thirst reflex is not triggered as easily as it is during summer. So don’t wait until you’re thirsty! Remember to hydrate throughout the day for optimal health.
